Traditional or self publishing: which builds more authority?

This decision consumes months of author energy. It is worth resolving quickly, using commercial criteria rather than status.
What each route actually gives you
Traditional publishing brings distribution reach, retail credibility and editorial infrastructure. It costs you timeline control and a large share of margin.
Self publishing brings speed, rights retention and margin. It asks you to build editorial quality, retail presence and launch coordination yourself.
Ask commercial questions first
Does your revenue model depend on bulk and corporate orders? Rights and pricing control matter more than a publisher logo.
Do you need bookstore presence for a speaking or media strategy? Then retail mechanics need a specialist, whichever route you take.
The quality floor is non negotiable
Readers do not forgive weak structure or editing because a book was independently published. Editorial rigour is the price of entry on both routes.
