How to nail a book award application

"Why do you think your book deserves the award?" It is the question authors dread on every application form. Here is what judges are actually weighing, and how to evidence it.
Unique and compelling subject matter
Study your competition and identify what you do differently. Compellingness is subjective; uniqueness is demonstrable.
A quick method: find your Amazon listing in an incognito window and look at the Products related to this item section. Read the reviews and sample pages of the books that appear there.
Cohesive style and structure
Judges look for coherence between the style you claim and the contents you deliver. If the subtitle promises a toolkit and there are barely any actionable steps inside, it will be held against you.
Impact, expertise and acclaim
Include reader reviews as evidence of impact. If a review runs long, cut it and mark the gap with an ellipsis to save words.
Demonstrate credibility with relevant background, published work, prior recognition, endorsements from experts and active participation in your field's communities.
Name specific critical acclaim and press coverage rather than claiming general praise.
Market fit and category choice
Choose your category carefully. If CEOs are not reading the book, it will not win the leadership category. Judges research and will not be misled.
Reader reviews that name the target audience are strong evidence of fit.
Focus on strengths
Word counts are tight, so you will not cover everything. Pick the areas where your book genuinely shines and make those unmissable.
